Semax
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the N-terminal fragment of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10), developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Like Selank, it incorporates a Pro-Gly-Pro C-terminal modification for enhanced stability. Semax has been extensively studied in Russian preclinical and clinical research as a neuroprotective and nootropic compound.
Research Overview
Semax was developed alongside Selank as part of the same research program investigating stable bioactive peptides. Research published in Neuroscience and Behavioral Physiology, Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, and Doklady Biological Sciences has documented its effects in various rodent models. Studies have examined its influence on BDNF and NGF expression in hippocampal and cortical tissue, its interaction with dopaminergic and serotonergic pathways, and its effects on gene expression profiles in brain tissue. The ACTH-derived core sequence retains melanocortin receptor activity while the glyproline modification extends biological stability. Semax represents one of the most thoroughly studied synthetic nootropic peptides in preclinical literature, with a substantial Russian-language research base that continues to grow.
