Selank
Selank is a synthetic peptide developed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. It is based on the naturally occurring immunomodulatory peptide tuftsin (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg), with an added Pro-Gly-Pro sequence that enhances stability against enzymatic degradation. Selank has been the subject of extensive preclinical research as both a nootropic and immunomodulatory compound.
Research Overview
Selank was developed in the 1990s as part of a systematic effort to create stable, bioactive peptides based on endogenous immune peptides. Research published in Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, Doklady Biological Sciences, and other journals has examined its interactions with GABA, serotonin, and dopamine systems in rodent brain tissue. Studies have investigated its effects on gene expression in hippocampal tissue, finding modulation of over 60 genes related to neurotransmission and immune function. The addition of the Pro-Gly-Pro glyproline sequence to the tuftsin core was specifically designed to resist carboxypeptidase degradation, extending the peptide's biological half-life in research models. Both intranasal and injection routes have been studied in animal models.
