DSIP

Delta Sleep-Inducing Peptide (DSIP) is a naturally occurring nonapeptide first isolated from the cerebral venous blood of rabbits during induced sleep by Swiss researchers Schoenenberger and Monnier in 1977. DSIP has been the subject of research into sleep architecture, circadian rhythm regulation, and neuroendocrine function for nearly five decades.

Research Overview

DSIP was discovered during pioneering cross-circulation experiments at the University of Basel, where blood from sleeping rabbits was found to induce sleep-like EEG patterns in awake recipient animals. Published research in journals including Neuroscience Letters, Pharmacology Biochemistry and Behavior, and the European Journal of Pharmacology has examined its effects on sleep architecture, stress hormone levels, and circadian-related gene expression. Despite its name suggesting a simple sleep-inducing function, the peptide's mechanism of action appears to involve modulation of multiple neuroendocrine systems rather than direct sedation. Research has shown it interacts with opioid receptors, somatostatin pathways, and circadian clock mechanisms. The peptide is unusual in that it can cross the blood-brain barrier, which is uncommon for peptides of this size.
