Epitalon

Epitalon (also spelled Epithalon) is a synthetic tetrapeptide based on the naturally occurring peptide epithalamin, which is produced by the pineal gland. Developed by Professor Vladimir Khavinson at the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology, Epitalon has been the subject of extensive research into telomerase activation, telomere biology, and age-related biomarkers in preclinical models.

Research Overview

Epitalon emerged from decades of Soviet and Russian research into pineal gland peptides and aging biology. Professor Khavinson's group published studies in journals including Bulletin of Experimental Biology and Medicine, Neuroendocrinology Letters, and Mechanisms of Ageing and Development examining the peptide's effects on telomerase activity, telomere length, and various age-related parameters in cell culture and animal models. The most notable finding has been the activation of telomerase in human somatic cell cultures, which has implications for understanding replicative senescence. Studies in rodent models have examined effects on circadian rhythm regulation, melatonin production, and lifespan parameters. While the research base is substantial, much of it originates from Russian-language publications, and independent replication by Western laboratories remains limited.
